ART IN THE ALPS
A 5 day drawing and painting course in the heart of the Tarentaise valley, tutored by Ray Elwood 30th August to 6th September 2008 “Drawing and painting is a wonderful occupation at every level of experience. The joy is in the doing! People who draw and paint see more of this world, especially when working on location” Ray Elwood
And we have a breath-taking location to offer you, set amongst the majestic peaks and valleys of the Tarentaise, in the very centre of the French Alps. Even the locals say we have one of the best views in the area.
Our Tutor We are very fortunate to have Ray Elwood as our resident tutor for a 5 day drawing and painting course. You will live in our Alpine chalet, a beautiful old 19th century Savoyarde farmhouse which has been converted into a home offering the comforts of modern life whilst retaining the charm of the original building. The chalet is in an original hamlet of old stone and wood farmhouses. At an altitude of 1400 metres we look down upon a valley dotted with little villages, forests and meadows and we are overlooked by magnificent mountains some of which are still snow-capped in the summer.
The Course .... .... will be flexible to suit all interests and abilities. The villages and surrounding scenery offer varied and interesting subjects to draw and paint, from the detail of beautiful old village water pumps to spectacular views. Ray will demonstrate at each session with line and colour, then encourage you to create your own composition. This course is also ideal for those who wish only to draw. The maximum number on the course will be 10 people so Ray will be able to give lots of personal attention to all.
* for self-drive, or if you would prefer to make your own transfer arrangements, deduct £90pp. ** Please note, depending on numbers, there will be one or two set pick-up times during the day. It may also be possible to arrange transfers from Lyon airport, again depending on numbers. Dates: 30th August to 6th September About Ray: Ray was born in Belfast and since 1980 has lived and worked in Newtownards. He studied drawing and painting with a Dutch tutor . “He taught me how to see” an approach Ray has never forgotten in his own teaching classes. “People who draw see more of this world than people who don’t. The camera lens can scrutinise a subject. Only an artist can portray the extended beauty of light and form we see all around us”. Ray is a member of the Ulster Watercolour Society and the Art Society of Ulster. He runs a variety of workshops and classes and his work is exhibited in various galleries including the Royal Ulster Academy. He won the JWR Peyton Award for Oil Painting at the 9th annual exhibition of the Arts Society of Ulster.

In order to change our lifestyle we gave up full time jobs and bought our chalet as an old wreck to renovate. Now in winter we open our fully refurbished mountain home to guests as a catered ski chalet. Our aim is to provide great hospitality in a relaxed and fun atmosphere. Our growing band of guests who return regularly is evidence that we achieve this. Our favourite compliment is “it is just like coming home”. Now we are hosting art courses in summer and you will be very welcome. For more information or to book your place on this course: e-mail: art@peak-leisure.co.uk Tel (UK): 08707 605610 Address: The Old Post Office Steventon Basingstoke RG25 3BA More Information The week:
Our location and some travel information Sainte-Foy-Tarentaise (post code 73640) is in the Tarentaise valley, about half-way between the attractive mountain town of Bourg St Maurice and the world-famous ski resort of Val d’Isere. The chalet is in a small hamlet called Montalbert, at an altitude of 1400 metres (20 metres higher than Ben Nevis!). Travel time by road from Geneva or Lyon airport is around 2½ hours. Inclusive transfer Transfers direct to the chalet will be available from Geneva airport. Depending on numbers and arrival times, there will be one or two set pick-up times on arrival day. Departure time on the last day will be in the morning, again depending on flight times. We may also be able to arrange transfers from Lyon airport, depending on numbers. Please contact us about this. Making your own arrangements … If you would prefer to make your own arrangements to get to the chalet, we will give you a discount of £90 per person on the cost of your holiday. The two options are self-drive or fly-drive. Self-drive We are about 10 hours from Calais and the other Channel ports. Please contact us for directions to the chalet or see the Travel tab on this website Fly-drive You can fly to either Geneva or Lyon (St Exupéry) airport, then hire a car. At Geneva airport, ensure that you hire a car from the Swiss side of the airport, as cars hired from the French side do not have the Swiss ‘vignette’ which allows you to travel on the Swiss motorway. There is only a short stretch of this in the journey, however without the vignette you will be stopped at the border and charged about 50 euros for a year-long license to travel on Swiss motorways – this is stuck to the car and is not transferable! Booking in advance through internet-based companies like Holiday Autos (www.holidayautos.com) can often save you a lot of money. As usual, the earlier you book, the less you pay. You will not need to use the car once you are at the chalet, as we offer our own complimentary transport locally. We will be happy to let you know if anyone else will be arriving around the same time as you, in case you would be interested in sharing a car, and thus the cost. Other methods … train or coach: Travel by train is possible, but not really viable. Unfortunately, the very good coach service available in winter does not run in summer.
